After we played Watch Dogs 2 predecessor, we happy to receiv a Watch Dogs 2 PC review copy of our friends over at Ubisoft. Excited that we where we started the game up, cranked up the grafics to it’s ultra settings and let us guide once again into “the world of hackers”.

Over the next few days, we played as Marcus Holloway, a brilliant young hacker fighting an establishment that uses technology to take away our freedom. Marcus will join DedSec, and together, they will take back control from this establishment. As Marcus, you will explore the Bay Area, complete DedSec Operations and participate in various activities in order to gather followers to reach your goal.

Watch Dogs 2 - PC Review

The first little fun thing we noticed while playing the game was, already in the beginning when Marcus jumped of a small wall, instead of a normal jump he did a back flip straight onto the beach.. we found it creative and a pretty original move. So our hunger for more of those little details came quickly as we processed throughout the game.

Marcus can hack into various electronic devices connected to the ctOS system with his in-game smartphone. For example, Marcus can modify the personal information of non-player characters to have them arrested, hack and manipulate every mobile phone featured in the game, disrupt traffic by hacking cars and traffic lights, hack into monitoring cameras, and carry out “mass hacking”, which hacks the electrical equipment of a large group of people.

Players also gain multiple options while hacking the same object. For instance, if the player attempts to hack a car, they can gain direct control over them, or have the car losing control and crashing in a random direction. If the player hacks a junction box, they can choose whether they should deactivate it or turn it into a proximity mine. Unlike Aiden, the protagonist of the first game, Marcus has an arsenal of advanced equipment, including a quadcopter and a remote-controlled car, both of which can be used for remote hacking and scouting.

Marcus’ apparel can be customized with over 700 articles of clothing, available for purchase in stores that maintain fashion styles unique to what is worn by the denizens in each area. The game features several main story missions, and side-missions known as “operations”. Once completed, Marcus’ follower count will increase, which ties back into the narrative and helps players to complete their ultimate goal.

The Three Playstyles

There are three playstyles in Watch_Dogs 2.

  1. The Aggressor who is all about combat
  2. The Ghost is all stealth
  3. And the Trickster who is all about manipulating people and things remotely to outsmart your enemies.

The game has been balanced to make all three playstyles relevant, and of course, you can mix them up the way you want. Do keep in mind that the hacking tools and various gadgets you can acquire will help you get better at these playstyles, so pay attention to what you unlock or purchase along the way. Hacking is useful in every situation once you’ve mastered it. These tools will also impact your ability to explore certain areas of the world which contain side operations and various key rewards you will need to unlock every skilland tool in the game.

Watch Dogs 2 Oakland Environment

Incrementally increase the level of details of all objects in the world (both near and far).If you want better draw distance and more little details in the world on short and average distances, increase this option. It works especially well combined with 4K and/or Multi sample Anti-Aliasing.But this combination will require really powerful hardware (aim for top-notch GPUs and/or SLImode). You can consider it as Ultra+ quality mode.

Ultra textures will be downloadable separately as free DLC. This option requires a reloading of the game, so you need to exit to the main menu and reload to apply texture changes.Note, that for Ultra textures you will need GPU with at least 6GB of video memory. In the multi-GPU mode, you will need at least 6GB of video memory on each GPU.

On PC, the game supports high-quality reflections on wet surfaces. You can see them after rain.

As Watch Dogs 2 takes place in San Francisco, we really wanted to showcase Karl the Fog. On PC, the game supports a high-quality ray-marched fog. Appearance of the fog is linked to the in-game weather cycles. It will first appear after 5 days in-game, then every 3 to 7 days.

Also, Watch Dogs 2 supports additional shadows from vehicle headlights. You can set the amount of nearby vehicles on which this option will be enabled (up to 4 cars).

As an additional quality option surpassing standard graphic quality presets, the game supports three levels of MSAA: x2/x4/x8.

Watch Dogs 2 now supports seamless player-versus-player hacking online. You are free to turn this off if you wish, but knowing that you may have to stop what you’re doing at the drop of a hat to find the nearby stranger tapping into your phone adds a small but appreciable layer to the experience. The game also offers opportunities to join police chases and take down troublemaking players–don’t be surprised when the tables are turned and you see another player on your tail, barreling down steep streets beside a fleet of SFPD vehicles. When you’d rather hack with, rather than against someone, you can take on small co-op missions, but they’re so close to single-player missions in structure that factoring in coordination can seem more like a chore than a benefit.

Watch Dogs 2 - PC Review 5

Multiplayer returns in Watch Dogs 2. The game introduces a seamless cooperative multiplayer mode, in which players can meet and interact with other random players. They can explore the open world and complete missions together, which will also help players to gain followers. The game features an emote system, which allows players’ characters to communicate with each other through basic gestures. The game can be played completely online or offline. It also features several competitive multiplayer modes:

Online Invasions: Online invasion is a one-versus-one competitive multiplayer mode, originally featured in the first game, in which a player joins another player’s single-player session and installs viruses on their DedSec system. The invading player must escape after a virus is successfully planted, while the original player must find and kill the invading player.

Bounty Hunter: Bounty Hunter is a new mode introduced in the game. If an online player creates too much chaos in the world, the mode will be initiated. Police, alongside one to three other players, will join the player’s game with the hope of killing the hunted and claiming the bounty, which gives them experience points. The hunted could either strike back at the hunters by killing them, which gives them greater rewards, or escape from them until the bounty expires.[13] The hunted, meanwhile, also can be assisted by another player if that player chooses to join the hunted. Players can manually place a bounty on themselves using the in-game smartphone
