Eric Stoltz was originally cast as the lead in Robert Zemeckis’ classic time travel adventure-comedy, and he embodied the now-classic role of Marty McFly for five weeks before being replaced by Michael J. Fox. Both producer Steven Spielberg and Robert Zemeckis made this drastic and unheard of decision because they felt the actor had a different comedic approach to the material that was written, and that he didn’t have the right comedic timing for this particular character.
